“That really resonated,” we say. What does that mean?
It’s a powerful word, really. It can mean to fill with a deep reverberating sound. It can mean to evoke or suggest images or emotions. And it can simply mean “meets with someone’s agreement.”
It brings to my mind sympathetic vibrations, such as when one violin or guitar string is being played, and others vibrate along with it, heard or unheard, “sympathetically”, as it were.
I have a theory. During times that are pleasant and easy, we pretty much carry on, just enjoying life. No need to ask for trouble when there isn’t any. It’s a time to enjoy and rest, in a sense.
When malaise or trouble hits, we start grasping, trying to figure out what’s wrong, where we missed the mark. It’s as natural an inclination as when you grab for a chair or doorway to get stability and balance if you find yourself slipping or falling.
Often what returns to us during those times are things that resonated during a previous time of stress, something that hit vibrations already going on inside of us. It may or may not have been spoken by someone significant in your life. But wherever and whenever and whoever it was, you knew it mattered at the moment and probably beyond. It hit an ongoing vibration.
One of my very favorite ones came from “The Patriot” and was spoken by Mel Gibson as Benjamin Martin. He was finally telling his son Gabriel (played by darling Heath Ledger, may he Rest In Peace) some of the horrific things he did during the French and Indian War that always weighed on him heavily. When his son asked him how he survived and carried on, Benjamin told him “Your mother.” He explained that his wife would simply tell him “Stay the course.”
I have found that useful in many situations for myself. Generally I have thought out the course I’m on, and the fact that there is a problem or my feelings aren’t going along with the course at the moment is not an indication that the course is in error. The phrase reminds me to keep on keeping on.
I have found it useful also with husband, friend, or children when they have begun something and are getting tired of the path or are second-guessing themselves. Any person with intellect and conscience is going to question their own wisdom. (Of course, those without conscience don’t question even when they should.) Often friends and family members need to be like Aaron and Hur who held up Moses’ arms when that was (for whatever reason) what gave victory to those fighting the Bad Guys. His arms would get tired after a while, and they brought him a stone to sit on and held his arms up to give his aching muscles relief. A well-timed “I believe in what you’ve thought through. Stay the course” can be golden. [Story found in Exodus 17.]
Another one was spoken by a friend during high school years. We were in one of our favorite places for sitting and talking out world problems, as well as our own. I admitted a feeling I had about something and immediately chastised myself for feeling that way. Kathy said, “Don’t be so afraid to be human.”
I’ve had to relearn that over and over. It certainly is in line with Buddhist teachings about learning to be patient and kind to yourself. In a way, it’s like that idea of parenting yourself: step outside one You, and treat that other You with compassion.
Another was very simple. I was living in a place where I worked, ate and went to church with the same people, day after day. In a setting like that, there is much room for comparison between how staff are treated and inconsistencies, whether real or perceived. I was lamenting about something I perceived to be unjust. Another staff member to whom I was not close at all was nearby. She called my name clearly. And then added, “Don’t get bitter.” It was simple and to the point and enabled me to immediately let go of the issue I thought I had the right to be angry about.
I had observed those who were bitter, and I was choosing to buy in. She had been living, working, eating, worshipping there for more than a few years and knew what that kind of comparison and complaining would do, not only to my own attitude, but to add to the inherent difficulties of being in that environment. Apparently I heeded her words, as I cannot tell you what it was that I found so crucial at that moment. I was grateful for the words and their simplicity.
Part 2 of Resonations will be coming. In the meantime, please comment below on some of the resonations that have helped guide you.
