I’m not addicted.  Really, I’m not. It’s kind of like embroidery — something to occupy my hands while I let my mind float.  I’ve actually gotten in touch with thoughts and sensations that have been floating around in my brain about various and sundry things while my fingers are busy moving the 6 of hearts to follow the 7 of spades.

So what have I learned about life?  

  1. Much of what we have is ready-made.  The only real choices we make are what to do with what’s been given us.  A therapist I know once said that in the Nature vs. Nurture debate, he favored Nurture for many years. After a long career in counseling, though, he now thinks Nature is the stronger factor in who we are.  
  2. It’s easy to miss opportunities, even when you think you’re watching carefully.  That ace could’ve gone up to start stacking the puppy toes, but I clicked on the next line-up of three too quickly and failed to notice it.  Could’ve changed the entire course of the game.  
  3. That being said, “changing the entire course of the game” doesn’t necessarily mean that change would’ve been for the best.  Sometimes missed opportunities that we might mourn over make room for the best things that happened in our lives.
  4. And that being said, it’s also not necessarily the best thing any more than the worst thing.  It’s just….a thing that happened.  All depends on what all comes after and, of course, how we respond to it.
  5. Best to try not to miss opportunities, since we don’t know what will or won’t turn out.  However, if you see you just missed one, don’t mourn too long.  There may be better things coming up in the next draw.
  6. Even if you don’t “win”, there’s value in playing. It’s nice to see the cards all stack themselves (solitr.com) when you beat the odds and win the game, but even if you don’t enjoy that reward of the 7s, 8s, and Queens and Kings following suit (so that’s where that phrase comes from!), you’ve probably sharpened your observation skills.

Now doubtless, I’ve missed lots of ways to apply this game to life.  Whether or not you’re a fellow Solitairian, please comment with your own observations.

And yes, I know they’re “clubs”.  But “puppy toes” is much cuter.
