When Death Comes Close

When Death comes close, all things change, even if only for a little while.

I type this at the close of our Sassafras’ final day of life.  She was a sweet black and white indoor kitty that lived here for 16 years as a gentle and quiet princess who loved Paul and tolerated me.  After all, my being here for just 5 years, I was still the new woman.  I had encroached on her territory.

But this loss is just the most recent.  It has been a year of various forms of loss.  We each saw a parent succumb to death, just a week apart, in May.  In July our Khaki Cat left one morning on his usual jaunt about the property, whatever that was, and he never came back home.  Next were some kinds of losses that won’t show up in obits or on Facebook,  but the effects can be just as difficult, maybe more.  And then today, a perfect golden fall day, we had to say our goodbyes to Sass.

After that week in May when we saw my stepmother and Paul’s father buried, I felt that while life buzzed all around, some things stood still.  I remember looking at the trees, and they seemed altered.  No, it was more that I felt altered. Oddly I felt more in tune with nature — closer to something that transcends the usual day-to-day thoughts I have about the traffic or what time I need to be where.  The trees and I were all just swaying with the winds that came without much choice in the matter and without regard to time.

Another symptom of Death’s nearness was a rawness.  I felt like I imagine a sheep may feel after being shorn — a vulnerability because the outer layer is gone, somehow peeled away.  All the instincts of self-protection and the need to huddle together with the other such shorn sheep were in play.

And finally, while there was the knowledge that Inez and Mr. Gip were gone in any form that I had ever known them, there was, along with it, the sense that they were more present than ever.  Perhaps that can be explained because death causes us to think back on that person’s life – what they stood for, what mattered most to them.  Then again, maybe they are in some sense closer after death than they could be when they were bound to one time and one place in a body.  Maybe we become bigger —less confined — after death.

There’s always the temptation to dress Death and Grief up a bit to attempt to make them hurt less.  We compliment the funeral home on how “real” the person looks, and we talk about what a good life the person had, etc.  There’s nothing wrong with that; we’re all coping the best we can.  But there is also something good, almost holy, about just letting it hurt, about letting that rawness do its work.

In this year when grief has been present with me more often than not, I’ve discovered that in the most odd and contradictory way, Death has caused me to feel both lost and refreshed.  When Death comes close, all things change.  Or mostly, we change.

  1. Hey Guys,

Warning: From February 2024, all existing email autoresponders will become obsolete!

In fact, if you want to send marketing emails, promotional emails, or any other sort of emails starting in February 2024, you’ll need to comply with Gmail’s and Yahoo’s draconic new directives.

They require regular marketers like you and I to setup complex code on sending domains… and existing autoresponders like Aweber and GetResponse are not helping: they’re requesting you do all the work, and their training is filled with complex instructions and flowcharts…

How would you like to send unlimited emails at the push of a button all with done-for-you DMARC, DKIM, SPF, custom IPs and dedicated SMTP sending servers?

What I mean by all of that tech talk above, is that with ProfitMarc, we give you pre-set, pre-configured, DONE-FOR-YOU email sending addresses you can just load up and mail straight away.

We don’t even have any “setup tutorials” like other autoresponders either, because guess what: we already did all the setup for you!

All of our built-in sending addresses and servers are already pre-warmed with Gmail and Yahoo and they’re loving us: 99% inbox rate is the average!

  12. It’s heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet, especially one that has been a part of your life for so long. The way you describe Sassafras as a gentle and quiet princess is so touching. It’s clear that she held a special place in your heart and in your home. The year of losses you’ve endured must have been incredibly difficult, and it’s understandable to feel altered by such profound experiences. How do you find the strength to keep moving forward after so much grief? Given the growing economic instability due to the events in the Middle East, many businesses are looking for guaranteed fast and secure payment solutions. Recently, I came across LiberSave (LS) — they promise instant bank transfers with no chargebacks or card verification. It says integration takes 5 minutes and is already being tested in Israel and the UAE. Has anyone actually checked how this works in crisis conditions?

  13. Losing a beloved pet like Sassafras is never easy, especially after 16 years of companionship. The year has been filled with so much loss, from parents to other pets, and each one leaves a unique void. It’s interesting how death can make us feel more connected to nature, as if it strips away the superficial layers of life. The rawness of grief can be overwhelming, yet it also brings a strange sense of closeness to those who are gone. How do you find peace amidst so much loss? Recently, I came across a program for GPT-generated text (генерация текста) in Russian. The cool part is that it runs locally on your own computer, and the output is actually unique and quite decent. By the way, I hope the content on your site isn’t AI-generated?

  14. Losing a beloved pet like Sassafras is never easy, especially after 16 years of companionship. The year has been filled with so much loss, from parents to other pets, and it feels like the world has shifted in some profound way. There’s a strange rawness that comes with grief, as if all the layers of protection have been stripped away. Yet, in the midst of it, there’s also a sense of connection to something greater, something beyond the everyday. How do we find balance between the pain of loss and the beauty of the memories left behind? German news in Russian (новости Германии)— quirky, bold, and hypnotically captivating. Like a telegram from a parallel Europe. Care to take a peek?
